Hello … John here. First, I’d like to thank Kevin for taking over the blog while I’m gone. He may or may night file a post-game report.
Well, it’s that time of year again. Interleague play begins tomorrow with the Yankees coming to Shea. I’m not an interleague fan, but how about you?
And, are six games with the Yankees too much? Should they make it three and rotate the site each year? Or maybe a four game wrap-around series, with two in each park over the same weekend?
Or, none at all? Has the buzz gone out of the series because of the novelty has worn off and that they’ve played in a World Series?

Hi John –
Frankly, I’d just as soon go back to the famed “Mayor’s Trophy Game”. One of these each year is plenty for me.
It was great the first year. They need to bag it. I don’t want to see it anymore. The AL has nothing to do with the NL until the post season.
Go back to the way it used to be. Much better more controversy
I agree … the Mayor’s Trophy Game was a great tradition that needs to come back. Interleague games, on the other hand, need to go. It was kind of interesting at first when teams played their crosstown or cross-state rivals, but then it got old real fast. It’s time to bag it.
A few games against a natural rival are OK—3 games against the Yankees is fine. But it´s gotten to be way too much. It´s also put the Mets (and the Braves) at a competitive disadvantage—we have to play the Yankees 6 times while Florida plays Tampa?? Philly plays Baltimore? St.Louis plays KC? Not exactly fair. At least ATL has to play the BoSox. Either eliminate it, reduce it to 3 games against your natural rival, or make all the teams in a division play the same opponents an equal # of times (which won´t make the wild card race fair, but is an improvement).
The interleague thing is okay but I think 6 IL games total would be more than enough. Other than a few of the hometown rivalries (NY, LA, Chi, SF/Oak), the rest really don’t fire the imagination. Maybe do a home-home against the Yankees and 4 more against some other teams. That’s enough.
I was at the not-rainout the other night and do you know what games they are giving away to those of us who had tickets? Mets-Twins. See how big a draw IL is?
This of all years, how can you not be excited about this weekend. There is a definitive chance that Joe Torre will not survive the weekend. If they get swept by their cross-town rivals (a possibility) and Boston continues to win, Monday morning they could be twelve games out. 12 games before Roger even takes the mound in a Minor league start!
This weekend is HUGE for those guys in the Bronx. And I couldn’t be happier about it. ;)
I hate to side with Chipper Jones, but it really isnt that fair to make some teams in the NL east play 6 games against the Yanks and Red Sox while others play none, and get 6 against the Rays and Orioles instead.
At least they finally did away with the Nats-Blue Jays ‘natural’ rivaly this year, three years after the Expos left canada, that was strange…
you know how i feel. interleague is ridiculous.
as it is. we should just have NL ball. its better ball. no wussy DH. and all the other baby rules.
;-]
John as a met fan i would officially like request you to help us start a petition to end interleague.
Thank you
(there’s a few beers in it for you)
:-)
One 3 game series a year is enough. Speread the rivalries out through the year and drop the games that are not rivalries. Toronto-Philly??? Who needs it ever….
