Mets Chat: Short night edition

Wrapping things up here. Tom Glavine was superb. One bad pitch to Barry Bonds, but other than that, exceptional.
The big thing today was the group buzz cut. They didn’t win because they cut their hair, but David Wright said the experience made them feel good about each other. If they believe it, that’s all that matters.
How much stock do you place in the concept of team unity? And, if you have something else on your mind, you can post it here, too.

I don’t even think the pitch to Bonds was all that bad. He was just sitting on the changeup and put a perfect swing on it. A bad pitch would be a hanger or a fat pitch on 0-2. I’m fine with Glavine challenging Bonds in that situation. And he pitched around him perfectly in the sixth.
And nobody will talk much about this, but how about the job Feliciano did, coming in to retire two right-handed batters so he could face Bonds with the bases empty? That was big.
Would you perform better in a job where you liked being around your co-workers, where the atmosphere was positive and supportive, where people were happy and rooting for each others’ success, as opposed to being in a neutral or even negative environment every day? How about if you not only had to go to an office with your co-workers, but spend half of your time on the road with them as well?
I’m sure that the impact of these environmental differnces vary among individuals, but overall, a happy workplace is good for productivity.
I don’t see where a baseball team is any different in that regard from any other “team” of professionals.
Nice job by Glavine tonight.
Hi John –
I like the Mets interaction with each other – but David must be some motivator to get his team mates to agree to this ‘new look’. Hope it helps them all – and it might take Roger who off the front pages here at home.
How come there’s no black announcers doing SNY Mets Broadcast? I thought this a free country.
Do you realize that Wagner, Smith and Feliciano have combined to give up one earned run in something like 40 innings this year? Brace yourselves for the day when they are unable to maintain this pace.
Hi John –
re: Team Unity
I see Glavine is quoted in the papers this AM saying he would like a ‘Clemens Deal’, too in an article by Don Burke in the Star Ledger.
Comments?
The most striking thing to me was the absence of Heilman in the 8th. His stock must be dropping badly in the minds of Randolph and Peterson.
I disagree about Heilman’s stock dropping. Feliciano has been lights out in his last few outings and Willie wanted him in there against Bonds. If that means Heilman’s stock is dropping then does it also mean that Joe Smith’s is dropping as he was also passed over
I think things like this are certainly important. It’s something you see more often on a high school team and maybe it simplifies things for them a little bit by reminding them that they are a team of grown men playing a game.
More importantly in my opinion is that Beltran was so involved in this. Although he’s a quiet lead by example type, it is great to see him letting loose like this.
I’m disappointed Reyes didn’t join in on the fun. He’s got one ugly mop on his head. John, tell David or the resident prankster, to put nair in Jose’s hat, then we’ll really have team unity. just an idea.
Even better, but it in his shampoo bottle. Then he really won’t notice.
I suspect that they’ll sneak up on Reyes and get him too at some point. But they might want to wait until his bat cools off so as not to mess with the mojo.
Mojo is right. Leave Reyes’ head alone.
I think the haircuts do a lot for team unity and this is a key thing in baseball.

I’m not worried about Heilman. They have enuf relief.
Dar,
Why do we need black announcers in the booth? There is no quota here. SNY has black sportscasters if you watch the channel. If you look at the color commentators both are Mets from the 80’s. The only name I can think of who would be great would be Mookie. The other black stars of that time are convicts.
Perhaps he doesn’t want to be an announcer.
the head shaving thing is perfect for a team like this. the BoSox grew their hair, but did it together, and look what happened to those “idiots.”
Also, remember back in the ‘90s when the Knicks shaved their heads in the playoffs? they didn’t win it all, but it definitely brought the team together from my perspective.
.....and if less hair means more wins, i’ll pay for the entire team to get a full body wax.
