Sportswriters like to call it “writing from the top.’’
When we write running game stories, we follow the action and start in the middle of the story and write from the top. The presumption is the essence of the game story will usually be determined in the late innings.
There wasn’t much mystery after the Giants’ 9-run fifth, so we could jump right in and start writing with little chance the game would turn around.
