John Maine won six games for the Mets last year. Tonight he won his fifth game. And, his ERA can’t get much lower.
Yeah, it’s been six starts and he’s got 29 to go, but he’s showing no signs this is a fluke. Pitching always concerns me, but Maine doesn’t even register on the worry meter for me any more. The best thing is that we wasn’t all that sharp but still got outs. That’s very impressive.
A lot to like about tonight. For me it was Maine and getting run production from elsewhere besides the big bats.

Hi John –
What a great game – Randy Johnson gives up homers to Julio Franco and Paul Lo Duca and John Maine simply shines. What’s he like around the clubhouse? I continue to believe that the Randolph influence on this team is an enormous factor – he presents such a postive, caring personality and really seems to take an interest in all of his players.
Across town, the other team is disintegrating before our eyes. I feel for the guys with the rings, but have no sympathy for those who arrived there just to get one – particularly Giambi.
However today is Derby Day – and I’ll be watching the early races and the ‘Run for the Roses’ with lots of memories.
PS – This guy Delcos is pretty good, too. The first line of your Maine column this morning is a gem. (Writers know these things.)
I am starting to get used to seeing easely.
and watching chavez is always a joy! we got robbed of a base though!
and look my man franco if half the players were as consistent as he is at his age. The mets would be unstoppable.
his glove his bat. you know he is manager after his 50th.
John-
Off topic, but…have you heard anything about the status of Michel Abreu? I know he had visa issues in ST that kept him out of paid admission games. What´s the latest? Is there a date for his return, and which team will he end up on?
Thanks…
Maine is s stud her should be an all star. by the way have you ever thought willie is playing the right psych game with him? Maine seems to be one who does not want to get ahead of himself even with the success he has. His manager is complying.
and one more thing endy saved a hr they just didnt give it to him.

To Dave in Spain (RE: Abreu)
He still has visa problems. Apparently, he misrepresented himself about his age and that hurt. I’ll do some more checking.
Thanks John!
The amazing thing is how many swings and misses he gets considering his fastball is usually 91-92 mph. He really has a deceptive delivery. The hitters swing late consistently.
