The question asked about John Maine these days is: How good can he become? The ceiling looks pretty high. Maine’s work is done with seven scoreless innings, giving up three hits and three walks with a career-high eight strikeouts.
The first two Nationals reached in the seventh, but Maine regrouped to get out of the inning, including striking out the last two hitters.
The wonder I had about him coming out of spring training is gone.

I thought Maine would be pretty good coming into the year but I don’t think anybody saw this coming.
John – This is the first time I’ve seen John Maine pitch this year. I was holding my breath until the game was over. I think he’s the real thing.
I’m with JohnM. I thought he’d be good but I didnt expect this level of dominance. We’re still in April though, so lets not get too ahead of ourselves…still it’s hard not to get really excited.
I did feel good during ST that Omar did the right thing by not over paying FA this year. Because I believed that they will come up with a good starting 5 this year from those who are already on the club.
And on top of that, they will have back ups behind them playing in the minors.
Plus from these pitchers they will come up with an ace or two among them.
Any news about El Duque?
I agree with the sentiments here. Good solid #3 coming in. did not expect this level of play.
and what about el duque? after his season so far this is a bit odd.
John – Nice piece about John Maine on the Mets page this morning. That was a terrific game yesterday – Franco pulled off a play with that throw to third that was reminiscent of Keith Hernandez at work.
Let him play full game. Its the only way to know..
And i saw it coming. i knew he had stuff. Pelfrey was the up in the aire rookie.
still is.. but give him time..
