-Manager Willie Randolph reiterated in his pre-game briefing with the media that the reason he let Oliver Perez hit for himself in the sixth inning last night was because he was pitching a good game and he believed the offense would produce something. “When you challenge him you don’t want to pull the rug out from under him,’’ Randolph said. “You want to show some confidence in him.’’

Well, if we had to sacrifice that one game in order to help Perez build his confidence for the rest of the year, then I’m fine with it.

I don’t have a problem with it. It’s the sixth inning. You’ll get three more chances to hit and if you’re as good as you think you are, you would think you’d score.
