A dozen Mets and the coaching staff visited Walter Reed Army Medical Center this afternoon to visit wounded soldiers from Iraq.
“When you see what they have gone through, any problems we have aren’t really problems,” said reliever Joe Smith.
Smith has five friends who are serving in the military, a cousin in the Army Rangers, and his grandfather, Herman Yount, was an Army Ranger in World War II.
“I’m fortunate to be here,” Smith said. “You can’t thank them enough. I don’t know if I could do what they do.”
The other players were Jose Valentin, Shawn Green, Endy Chavez, Julio Franco, John Maine, Mike Pelfrey, Aaron Heilman, David Newhan, Orlando Hernandez, Billy Wagner and Damion Easley.
