Yeah, they beat up on a team they should. What’s the big deal? It is a big deal. Championship teams don’t stumble against teams they should handle. The Mets played sloppy against Washington over the weekend, but put it all together against Florida. The Mets played as well as possible the last two nights.
The Mets moved into first place by a half-game ahead of Atlanta. I mention this because Willie Randolph placed an importance on this weekend’s series that I didn’t expect him to.
“I usually don’t put a lot of emphasis on and early season series,” Randolph said. “But, it’s the Braves and they are a team we have to beat because they are in our division. This will be a big series for us. I’ve always had a lot of respect for them and always will.”
It’s not the end of the world if the Mets don’t beat the Braves this weekend, but from a psychological standpoint they’ve closed the gap and don’t want it to widen.
