Mets VP Jeff Wilpon issued this statement as to why Willie Randolph will be the only Met to wear Jackie Robinson’s uniform No. 42 tomorrow night:
“As you know, there was no shortage of interest among our players and coaches to wear No. 42 for our celebration of the life of Jackie Robinson. We believe that Willie—as a person and leader, as a New Yorker and Brooklynite, as a family man— embodies Jackie’s nine ideals wonderfully articulated by his daughter Sharon. Willie has a personal connection to Rachel Robinson and the Robinson family. For those reasons we felt the singular focus of Willie wearing 42 would best represent the entire Mets organization in most appropriately honoring Jackie’s enduring legacy.”

It’s fine with me that Willie will be representing the Mets and honoring Jackie Robinson by wearing number 42 tomorrow night.
Wonder how many of your other bloggers here know the Traveling Wilburys??
What a coverup. The grumblings about Willie being selfish must have begun to surface. I remember his quotes from last week when he said HE wanted to be the only one to wear 42…not the organization. Easly even was quoted as saying it was Randolph’s decision.
Not including other player’s who wanted to be a part of something…..doesn;t exactly sound what Jackie would want?
Willie gets af ‘F’
