In response to your questions and comments on Mets Chat.
To Joe (RE: Pitching): I’m not sold on the starting pitching either. I never have been. It has been good so far, but there are enough legitimate questions to have Omar Minaya to be testing the trade waters. Nothing is imminent because it is too early in the season, but toward the trade deadline you can expect things to heat up. The reports are encouraging on Pedro Martinez, but the Mets can’t take it for granted he will come back.
Valentin has been around a long time. He hasn’t forgotten how to hit. Just call it a bad start. Valentin has played the position exceptionally well, and the Mets have enough hitting where what Valentin gives can be considered a bonus.
To Brandon (RE: Franco): Franco is here because he’ll help them win a few games. That’s one.
To Mel (RE: Trap): It was the timing of Washington coming between the two Philly series that made me think of it. Teams do look ahead and lose focus. Maybe that’s what happened today, maybe it isn’t. Hernandez giving up the home run ball is a sign of losing focus. So is leaving all those runners on base. They’ll deny it a letdown because no team admits to it, but the crispness wasn’t there.
To G: (RE: Pelfrey): I wouldn’t be too concerned with Pelfrey. Three mph. on a cold night could be the reason. Also, with his secondary pitches working there was no need to crank it up to full.
