This Day in Mets History

In 1965, the Dodgers’ “Don Drysdale”:http://www.baseball-reference.com/d/drysddo01.shtml homered off Al Jackson on Opening Day at Shea. Mets lost, 6-1.
I only saw Drysdale pitch on TV, which obviously isn’t the same. He seemed like such a pleasant guy when he was broadcasting, but Joe Torre said he was nothing like that on the mound, that he had a mean streak a mile wide.
Going back to what I said about Oliver Perez needing to get mad, here’s what Drysdale once said: “I hate all hitters. I start a game mad and I stay that way until it’s over.”
Mickey Mantle said this about Drysdale: “I hated to bat against Drysdale. After he hit you he’d come around, look at the bruise on your arm and say, ‘Do you want me to sign it?’”

oh man. thats just too rich!
Obviously Don studied at the Bob Gibson Finishing School for Pitchers.
To Steve C. (RE: Drysdale)
Do you agree? Should Perez be a little meaner?
John – if it makes him a better pitcher then yes!
oh forgot the pitchers name. handle bar mustache. the mad something …
talk about mean!
The Mad Hungarian … Al Hrabosky
I think all our pitchers should be mean.
Also baseball needs to ban the armor. Pitchers need to come inside and the hitters need to be afraid of getting hit otherwise its bp time.
Dave
John – thats him! jesus. he would charge the batter! now thats mean!
The batters need to learn to get out of the way., they get hit on purpose..like whats his name from the cards? or whatever..he jumps in from of the ball.
