In 1964, the wrecking ball hits the Polo Grounds. The death of any ball park is sad. My dad saw games in the Polo Grounds and Ebbets Fields. I just have pictures.
Anybody out there see any games in the Polo Grounds? Any memories?
I saw plenty of games in the Polo grounds. If you sat in the bleachers or the grandstand in left and right center you couldn’t hear the noise from the rest of the stadium because you were so far away. I liked te overhang the best. There was nothing more frustrating for an outfielder to be standing and waiting to catch a pop up and it being a homer in the upper deck. (And it was a pop up as it was less than 300 feet down the lines). The other great novelty was with the club houses in center field, the pitcher had a 450 foot walk when taken out of the game. And the pens were both not just on the field but in fair territory in left and right center. There will never be a place as unique as the Polo Grounds.
To Mel (RE: Polo Grounds)
I saw a picture of Ralph Branca walking to the clubhouse through centerfield … that must have been an incredible stroll. To be able to read his mind as he took that walk … would have been something,
