Willie Randolph said Ambiorix Burgos would pitch in a tight spot, and that came today he got Abraham Nunez on a grounder with the bases loaded to end the fifth. But, Randolph stuck with Burgos, who struggled the entire next inning before giving up a home run to three-run Ryan Howard.
Pitching to the left-handed hitting Howard is something to question. Isn’t that why you have Pedro Feliciano and Scott Schoeneweis? I don’t think Burgos has done anything to warrant the trust of pitching to Howard.
Now, for sure, he hasn’t.

It’s easy, they should have walked Howard and have Burgos pitch to Burrell. That simple. Willie didn’t want to run through pitchers, so just do that, save an arm.
To Joseph (RE: Burgos)
My point is I don’t think he should have been in there to pitch to Howard in the first place. After one runner reaches base you take him out.
I’m with you John. This seems like at least the third questionable pitching decision Willie has already made in the young season. I am having trouble remembering the other two in the middle of the game, but I know I have been repeatedly questioning these decisions the last several days.
He did this all last year as well, fortunately (or maybe unfortunately) he didn’t get burned as much as the odds say he should have so he’s doing it again.
I think I am going to be sick….
Burgos threw 11 pitches so Utley and should have been allowed to leave on a high, especially after ending the preceeding inning.
Eh, I’m actually fine with Willie’s non-move there. Burgos had just won a big battle with Utley and he got ahead of Howard pretty quickly. He just made one mistake after Howard fouled off a couple good pitches. It happens, and the game isn’t over yet.
fastball up to a fastball hitter who crushed it..
however, i saw it as willie challenging amby see what he got. see how he does. he made a mistake..
Why didn’t he run with Lastings and pinchhit with Endy? Glavine needs to teach some of our hitters how to bunt someone over.
if we absolutely have to win this game, i understand being really upset with willie’s decision making there, but I don’t think that’s the point at this point in the season. It’s a long season, you have to see what you have. Willie didn’t do this for nothing. And if the same situation was late in the season in an im portant game, you wouldn’t have seen it happen.
Burgos shouldn’t even be in the majors, let alone pitching to Howard with two men on. Send him down to work on his control and bring up Park.
its early and you have to see what you have, as well as give the guy some confidense. burgos aint the 1st guy to give up a hr to howard. do any of the other guys warrent that trust then? he didnt look any worse than heilman yesterday either. i dont see why people over react to 1 mistake like this.
