Park should have made the team regardless of how he pitched in the spring and this is notwithstanding the fact that he led the team in K's (aveing about 12ks/9innings) and was throwing comfortably in the 91-93 range. Our rotation just sucks, we have two 40 yr olds who can barely hit 86-88 on the gun, two guys with potential but who have pitched less than 100 mlb innings, and a guy with an "upside" who's in fact really had only 1 full quality yr as a mlb starter. Spring ERA over 20 innings is a useless peice of information. Park had 2 or 3 bad innings. Spring K's mean something. ie. they are transferable to the regular season. I don't know why he accepted other than the fact that he wants to pitch in the playoffs. But lets get real, we have the best offence, but we're never going to win a 7 game series against a real staff with a good 1 2 punch. ie. Boston, Yanks, Toronto. One has been in the bull pen is fine and that is Sele, two is too many, and Chan Ho is going where he can be a happy starter and if he's lucky he'll get called up and won't be as bad as Lima, but if we're lucky when we need a starter Vargas or Humber will be ready so we don't have to see Chan Ho in Shea. I think Smith if used properly has a better shot at sticking than Burgos. I know Burgos has nasty stuff but so does Julio, Benitez, Owens, Lindstrom and Bell and none of them is still with the Mets. Coupled with the age of some of the pitchers and assorted injuries that always occur in the season if Park does well at triple A he has an excellent chance of being called up.
