Today’s METS batting order vs. Florida:
SS Jose Reyes
C Paul Lo Duca
CF Carlos Beltran
1B Carlos Delgado
3B David Wright
LF Moises Alou
RF Shawn Green
2B Jose Valentin
P Ambiorix Burgos
My guess is outside of Burgos that’s your Opening Day batting order.

John – I gotta say this is the line-up that I personally prefer. LoDuca was a great #2 hitter and Wright a terrific RBI guy. In my opinion it’s more important to have the RBI and power guys like Wright in the middle of that line-up. You just can’t let Wright forgo the RBI opportunities he will have in the 5th spot. There are bound to be more guys on base with him in the middle than in the #2 spot. I know the stat head guys disagree, but look at #3 through #6…that middle of the line-up is terrifying to any pitcher because of the depth and by far the best in the NL.
To Astoria Mets Fan (RE: Lineup)
I agree 100 percent.
What he said and what I have been saying all year long.
How long do we give Green to produce? I’ve been agitated by this since the trade of Nady for Perez and Hernandez last year. I still would rather have Nady than Green. I know we needed the bullpen help at the time because of the Sanchez injury but still. I don’t feel like he’s going to hit for a significant average or power. And I just don’t see Valentin replicating his season last year, or anything close for that matter. How long do we give Green though? I hope he makes me eat crow but I’d much prefer Milledge.
This is an AL lineup.
Really scary in a weak NL.
Now if we could just get the pitching to hold..
To Rob (RE: Green)
I don’t think you can make a move on Green before 100 at-bats. That should be enough time to get a handle on things.
LoDuca should not be hitting No 2 if for no other reason than he rarely walks. Wright’s higher OBP means more RBI opps for the rest of the lineup.
John,
Just curious – what are your thoughts on David Wright? Does he rebound from last year’s second half, or is that second half more the player he truly is? Willie’s willingness to bat Wright second sort of makes me think he might believe the latter is true. What do you think?
thanks,
ryan
Doh! I’m not John, you are…
John thanks for the comment. It’s exciting we’re only two days away! I guess we’ll see how Willie handles it soon enough…
Kevin- I somewhat agree with you about LoDuca but you don’t mess with success. Moving LoDuca makes me nervous as well because I don’t see him hitting as well as he did last year. Same thing with Valentin. And you know how I feel about Green. If Alou is ever injured or slumping, and LoDuca (assuming he’s not hitting second) and Valentin aren’t producing like last year, 5-8 doesn’t look so good anymore.
Valentins been hot lately how about batting him 7th and moving Green to 8th?
This Line-up is going to be a beast for pitchers to contend with. 1-5 is going to give them nightmares. If 6-8, with not much pressure, come through and put up average numbers the Mets should clinch by late August. A healthy Alou and a rebound from Green makes this order tough. I’d prefer a platoon of Green/Milledge. It takes a little pressure off Green he can relax an maybe shoot some good numbers in 350 ab’s or better, while Milledge gets experience, some good ML experience and not much pressure either. I’m so looking forward to Sunday night against the Cards. Some pay back is in order!
To Ryan: (RE: David Wright)
Wright hit well in September and in the first round of the playoffs vs. Dodgers, so talk he faded in the second half isn’t totally accurate. He slumped in August, but that’s not uncommon for a lot of guys.
Another reason I don’t like Wright hitting second is as a RBI he will have more opportunities fifth. Hitting fifth, he will have Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado on ahead of him, and also Jose Reyes and Paul Lo Duca. The latter two have decent on-base percentages.
However, with Wright hitting second, he’ll have Reyes, the pitcher and Jose Valentin/Shawn Green. That’s less chances to drive in runs. I don’t care if hitting second gives him 30 more at-bats a year. Mark my words: The Mets’ No. 2 hitter will have less runners on base ahead of him than their No. 5 hitter.
