Mets in the Morning

March
30

Very odd feeling in the clubhouse this morning. Some guys will be bussing to Tampa after the game, others won’t. Some will stay in minor league camp. Others fly home and wait for the phone to ring.

Mets say they’ll make their final roster decisions this morning. The three issues are where to start Mike Pelfrey; how many pitchers, 11 or 12; and what happens with Lastings Milledge.

If they keep 11, Milledge could stay, but what about all those consistent at-bats he was supposed to get? Then again, they could go with 11 and still option Milledge to the minors.

Ambiorix Burgos, Chan Ho Park and Jon Adkins are competing for either one or two pitching spots.

If it is between Park and Adkins, it is a no-brainer. You have to go with Park. The options issue is moot in that scenario.

If they cut Adkins, it will be another goodbye to another good friend.

Of the 4 players mentioned here if you have 2 spots , you keep the vets.

Perhaps you trade Adkins to someone who is desperate. Gagne is on the DL again..

Amby needs to learn to pitch in AAA. Milledge can work on skills in AAA for a few weeks.

Pelfrey can be put on a schedule and just get confortable in AAA.

Park will be used sometime this season like when El Duque pulls a hammy.

I don’t think it’s a no-brainer between Park and Adkins. You have to consider that Park will get $600,000 if he makes the Opening Day roster. Adkins has been absolutely awful, and will probably pass through waivers (if Jim Duquette isn’t looking). To keep Park with the hopes that he’ll turn into a setup man is not sensible, especially since he’s made it clear that his heart isn’t in it. While he’d have value as a spot starter, you can’t condition a guy to pitch one inning at a time and then suddenly expect him to throw 6 innings.

Philip Humber, Jason Vargas, Aaron Sele, and eventually Dave Williams will be available to spot start. Let Park walk, keep Burgos around, and decide whether to waive Adkins.
