Thanks for your questions and comments on Mets Chat. I hope I can give you the answers and comments you want:
-Billy Wagner: Ambiorix Burgos will be a project for Rick Peterson. Burgos is a raw talent and needs a lot of work. As far as Wagner goes, he’s still throwing the splitter. The game where he gave up five was “just a bad game,’’ he said.
-New Orleans opener: I would think it would be either Pelfrey or Humber. They haven’t made the call yet on where Pelfrey will start the season. If they follow through with what they’ve been saying, he will be in the minors for the start of the season.
-On keeping Adkins: If they keep Adkins they can also send down Smith and Burgos to the minor leagues because both players have options. If they keep Burgos or Smith, the odds are they’ll lose Adkins through waivers. Adkins has not pitched well overall this spring, but has had a few games where you could see the attraction. Keeping Adkins lets them keep all three. It also buys them two weeks until they add the fifth starter. The way I see it, they are in a position where they don’t have to make a decision now. Make it in two weeks.
-Luggage: The team allows us the opportunity because we open on the road to ship our extra luggage home on the truck rather than lug it to St. Louis and Atlanta. It is a courtesy and we are appreciative of it. If I thought it was a conflict I wouldn’t do it.
-Clubhouse: They say they are ready, but this year isn’t last year. The expectations are a lot higher and I think that impacts the mood to some degree. There have been a lot of changes (four-fifths of the rotation wasn’t on the Opening Day roster last year). It’s different.
-Wright hitting second: I’ll go more into that later, but I don’t like it. The Mets scored a lot of runs in the early innings last year with Lo Duca hitting second. Lo Duca’s attributes as a hitter are best displayed hitting second. With Wright fifth, the lineup is deeper because that puts Alou sixth. That leaves 7-8-9. If Wright hit second, Alou goes to fifth and that means you are weaker in the tail end of the order.
