Today is Day 40 here in paradise. It seems like it has been a lot longer. Everybody wants to go home. There are signs all over the clubhouse reminding the players when the truck back to Shea is leaving.
Another eight days. Then on to St. Louis.
The players on the bubble are saying this is a big week for them. Joe Smith was talking this morning about getting in three or four games. Maybe go back-to-back.
Tom Glavine is on cruise control. Monday will be his last start of the spring—maybe his last ever in spring training—and he’ll take an extra day off heading into the opener. This morning he was talking music. He loves James Taylor and likes Led Zeppelin.
Lastings Milledge said it won’t be any “fault of mine,’’ if he doesn’t make the roster. He said he understands why. The Mets want him to get at-bats and not sit. He’ll be at Shea this summer, and next year he’ll be in the Opening Day lineup.
Here’s what’s going on this morning:
-John Maine starts vs. Marlins in Jupiter; Chan Ho Park starts in PSL.
-Ambiorix Burgos needs to show something if he’s going to stick.
-Orlando Hernandez said he’s feeling fine after yesterday’s start. I know, I know, I brought up the DL. He said he’s not sure about Opening Day, and if he admits that, I have to hold by that theory. If he pitches well in his next start, well, I’ll probably have to back off.
Enjoy the day. Hope you’re winning your NCAA brackets.
