Thanks for your responses and questions today on Mets Chat.
I hope I touch on everything:
Lastings Milledge: Yes, he has played better than Ben Johnson. I didn’t mention him for the final roster spot because I still see him opening the season in the minors. The Mets don’t want him sitting around.
Bench: I see David Newhan making it over Johnson. Read about that tomorrow in The Journal News.
Julio Franco: Maybe the Mets hamstrung themselves by signing him to a two-year deal. They can always eat the contract. Franco’s value is in that as a pinch-hitter and the intangibles. He’ll do something positive this season.
Juan Padilla: His elbow is sore and he has been shut down for two weeks.
Aaron Sele: Sele could make it as the long reliever because Jorge Sosa isn’t getting it done. Hitters are batting .295 against him this spring. A couple of weeks ago Sele told me he would not accept a minor league assignment.
