March 21: Mets in the Afternoon

March
21

Greetings from Vero Beach … yet another locale that long loved the Dodgers only to be jilted.

Here’s what’s going on so far today:

-Tom Glavine threw 90 pitches in a minor league simulated game this afternoon. Glavine got his work in, but said he wasn’t able to set-up minor league hitters as he would major league hitters. When asked what his thoughts were heading in to his last week ever in spring training, Glavine said, “maybe it is … maybe it isn’t.’’

-Duaner Sanchez will throw off the mound tomorrow. That’s going to draw some attention from the brass.

-Oliver Perez goes tonight vs. LA. Manager Willie Randolph said he’s been pleased with Perez’s spring, adding he fed off the momentum from last year’s postseason.

-Aaron Sele starts tomorrow against Atlanta. With a strong game, it wouldn’t be surprising if he stuck as the long man. The job was Jorge Sosa’s for the taking, but he’s spitting the bit.

Hey John, quick question. Based on the spring rotation as it stands now, can you project who would be throwing this Sunday against the Astros? It will be my first visit to Port St Lucie and I’d love any info you can give on any aspects of the park or autographs, or anything really.

And who’s pitching Saturday against the Orioles? I’ll be there, sitting in the box next to Omar, waving my “Delcos for US Senate ‘08” banner. If nothing more, it should get you a little face time on SNY, no?

To Eric (RE: The upcoming rotation)

Guys, here’s what I have for the rotation the rest of the week (remember, they call them probables for a reason)

    Tomorrow: Aaron Sele
    Friday: Orlando Hernandez
    Saturday: John Maine
    Sunday: Mike Pelfrey

    To Eric (RE: (Tradition Field)

They gather outside the player’s parking lot around 6 for autograpns. It is hit and miss. Mostly miss at that time of the day. Inside the park, get down to the side of the dugout or down the foul line. (Left field for the Mets).

Concessions: In addition to the routine stuff, they have a pulled pork sandwich and a smoked turkey leg that looks as if it is something out of the Flintstones. I’ve had both and thought they were good.

As far as eating in PSL, you either have to go before six or after nine. The wait can be long. The usual places. Chili’s, Outback, Ruby Tuesday, TGIF …

What exactly did Glavine mean when he said “wasn’t able to set-up minor league hitter…”?
