burgos has upside,no doubt about it. But he needs to start the year in the minors and get his stuff together.A good bullpen needs strike throwers,it worked for the mets last year. Burgos would have to be coddled every time he takes the mound, throw in a hostile shea crowd, and its a recipe for disaster.Joe Smith is young and very much untested, but from the looks of it,he’ll throw the ball over the plate more often than not.

I don’t want this guy anywhere near an MLB opposition linuep, period. To quote a classis Sci-Fi pic: “Experiment with your own life, dammit!”
OP done real good, albeit against a slumping Dodgers lineup. Burgos coughed up his obligatory run, but the rest done good, too.
We should all be liking this Joe Smith guy; he needs to be north-bound.
Best of all? Willie speaks, bats listen.

Stick a fork in it, we already know whats gonna happen here.

The real interesting question—is Urdaneta being given serious consideration for the pen? He’s certainly being given a chance to stick around and make an impression. Sosa was decent tonight but has been generally mediocre; Urdaneta, on the other hand, has looked really good. I’m sure Willie wants a long-man type, which presumable Urdaneta can’t be, but maybe Schoenweis can do that (especially since Feliciano’s gonna be the primary lefty)? I really like what I’ve seen from Lino so far.

Welcome to the dark side, Jesse. I’ve been the lone wolf howling about Urdaneta all spring. I’d like to see Heilman and Schoeneweis handle the 7th and 8th innings, with Urdaneta and Feliciano handling the innings before.

Hey Johnny D, I like your blog, great stuff… Here is what is driving me crazy right now, and this is not Burgos related cause he stinks, although a couple seasons with Rick will tune him up for sure!
D Matsusaka drives me crazy! (and this relates to the Mets…) Every spring training outing this guy has is the biggest thing since sliced bread! Yesterday oh “wow he was untouchable and ‘scintilating’ against the Pirates” (even though he did give up a run, and I know I could shut them down myself!)
Now relating this to the Mets, D Mat’s ERA is 2.84 in spring and the media goes CRAZY over this kid. and thats fine… but everyone TOOLS on the Mets rotation as “the worst rotation on any ‘good’ team… but 4 of our starters have better eras this spring than D Mat! EVEN OLIVER PEREZ!! (2.70) Glavine 1.29 Pelfrey 1.2 ish Maine 1.00
so basically my point is a) why does the Media get so crazy about DMAT and Spring Training (I can understand the Japanese media going crazy)and his supposed ‘lights out stuff’ and b) if spring training means ANYTHING, I feel GREAT about the mets rotation right now!
Also, Reyes is an absolute beast right now…

JohnnyD? Has there been any talk about La Russa’s traffic nap? Any reaction?

You dont have the chat thing up but I wanted to ask you this question John:
I was wondering. Why do you think Pelfrey hasnt been striking out as many batters this season. I was looking at his minor stats and all he had a pretty good K/9 rating. I wonder if its just cause he is throwing consistantly down and not going up high in most of his outings.
