So far, he’s the good Oliver Perez. Seven strikeouts in four innings, including David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez twice each.
He’s working both sides of the plate and keeping the ball down. Pitching is really easy when you can do that all the time. Trouble is, Perez hasn’t been able to.

Looks unhittable tonight according to my dad. Let’s give the guy the benefit of the doubt. There’s a reason why the entire Mets organization is so high on this kid.
man, when he was getting on top of that slider, it was unhittable, and he could throw it for a strike, or just leave guys guessing with it after pounding them with fastballs. He also was locating the fastball down in the zone very well, and pretty well on the outside sometimes too. Manny watching for that first K was a great pitch, and the previous slider to Papi was nasty. After losing control very breifly, he regained it real quick as soon as he was facing Ortiz and Manny again, seems like he gets up for the big at bats, which means he needs to focus more on ALL of the at bats. Lost it a bit in the 5th (expected, still stretching that arm out) but got out of the inning pretty easily. Good sings all around. I think he pretty much cemented a spot in the roatation with this start. Hopefully he can keep it up.
To Chris and Joseph (RE: Perez)
When you’re lefthanded and can throw like that you’ll get a chance. It’s games like this that keep Perez around. Of course, you’d like to see it all the time, but he’s never been consistent.
A great performance by Perez tonite. Another step forward by Oliver and Peterson to get ready for the real season. Why do we hold Oliver to a higher standard than other young pitchers? He is going to have some stinkers as well. But when the year is over, with good health, he will win 16 games for us. Just wait New York, just wait…
Regarding Perez and the higher standards: Let’s not forget that he’s one year older than Humber, a guy who’s being cut an awful lot of slack right now in preparation for future greatness.
