Ha, ha!! Funny stuff! I admire the fact that Henderson is so positive about Jose’s talents. The kid is gifted—no doubt, but it would take a miracle for Jose to break that record, and he knows it.
If Jose can hit for higher average (say .330) and get his on-base percentage up over .400, I think he could possibly steal 80-90 bases in a season, but I don’t want him to kill himself out there on the basepaths. Right now his success rate at stealing is pretty good, but if the opposing pitchers and catchers know he’s gonna run every chance he gets, that success rate will plummet. It’s interesting to think about, though.

Stealing is overrated.

Ok.
And the Cards did well in the 80’s because they slapped the ball around with singles and did not steal a base?

nothing unnerves the infield more than the risk of the base being stolen. once that happens many times it affects the next pitch.

Nothing hurts the team more than an out. Which happens on a SB attempt about 30% of the time, 15% of the time in a best case scenario. Those outs are prohibitive to scoring runs, obviously, so much so that they almost completely cancel out the added benefit of having a runner at second or third base instead of their original position. As for distracting infielders/pitchers/catchers, etc., this is marginal and unproven. These guys are professionals. It’s not like the runner takes off and they go ‘Whoa! What’s he doing? That’s crazy!’ No. They’ve seen it a million times. Former Mets’ 3B Coach and current Nationals manager Manny Acta said it best (paraphrasing) ‘I’m not going to try to steal a ton of bases just so people call me “aggressive.” It’s just as likely that a guy will score from first with none out than from second with one out.’
