I’m not sure why, but Saturday’s always seems to be slow in spring training. Still, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing happening. Time to catch up on a few things:
— Rickey Henderson arrives tomorrow as a guest instructor. His special project last year was Jose Reyes. The All-Star shortstop will get a refresher course this week. Henderson’s project this spring will be Carlos Beltran, who said he wants to steal more.
— Remember the tendon problem Billy Wagner had in his left middle finger last year? He said it happens often in the spring, and to check back roughly two weeks after the games start. “So far, so good,” he said.
— They are playing “Blueberry Hill,” between innings. That was a nickname for a girl I had a crush on in college. It’s funny, I could go two years without hearing that song, then when it comes on be able to sing it word for word.
— Oliver Perez out of the game, one run in four innings. A real good start for him.
— The Mets have gone deep three times today. Ben Johnson and David Newhan back-to-back in the second, and Jose Valentin in the fourth.
