Mets players are in complete support of manager Willie Randolph’s decision to send reliever Duaner Sanchez home as punishment for repeatedly reporting to practice late.
Second baseman Jose Valentin said Randolph did the right thing and that Sanchez let the team down. Here’s what he had to say:

Wow,Sanchez is really surprising me with his tardiness.I was remembering when the Mets clinched the division last year and seeing Duaner in the dugout with his teammates raising his left arm to cheer when Valentin hit his 2nd homer against Fla.
This is why having strong veteran leadership on our team is so critical. Younger players would have just sat by and watch Duaner be lazy. Some young players might have even looked at this situation as a license to be lazier themselves. Our veterans won't allow that to happen though, and neither will Willie and Omar.
It's still disturbing as a fan to hear Duaner be this way though. He's an extremely important part of our team. We need him to step up. I'm even hearing rumors the Mets might either cut or trade Duaner over this, so it must have gotten pretty bad.
That is just rumors. I can't see the Mets getting rid of Sanches this early in spring training. It's a bit like throwing the baby out with the bath water. But if this situation happens again and Sanchez doesn't step up, the Sanchez is goinng to have a big problem.
Sanchez was nasty last season—an ERA+ of 166. He's going to be in the bullpen and a few missed practices won't change that. Stupid drama. I believe there is daytime television programming available for those who wish to bask in such sentimentalities.
I've always admired Valentin as a standup guy, but he's just the 2nd Baseman. You have to think what he's just said is on the minds of all the vets, particularly Glavine, Wags, Lo Duca, Delgado and Beltran. God knows WHAT Franco must be thinking!
Interestingly enough, I'd be most curious to hear what Pedey has to say, with all the medical/physical stuff he's had to undergo. I'm thinking "Cut the kid some slack" are not exactly the words he'd be using…
Thank you for this audio. Just goes to show you this isn't your old Art howes team anymore. Time for guys to grow up. Love when Men aren't afraid to speak honestly. If a teammate is dogging it, there is a time and a place to call him out in the open. Love this kind of leadership. Valentine just went up a few notchs in my book. Bought himself a couple of 0 for 4's with men ON:).
Not on this level, but a MVP type moment for us last year was when J Franco got Beltran out on the steps.
Bravo Valentine
Mets fans smile because I think this bunch is as good as it gets in the clubhouse and in character:)
I'd like to know what Sanchez has to say because I can't understand why he is acting this way. I seem to remember reading in the off-season how anxious he was to get back to playing…so this really baffles me. I would think he'd be the FIRST guy at the park everyday…not the last.
I was at Tradition watching the second day of training, Sanchez was a embarrassment to baseball, he did 6 40 yard wind sprints at 50% and fell to the ground tried and sucking air after.
I know when training starts, doesn't he.
He wants to be somewhere else. Good move Willie!

Wow, John. You seem to be able to be in twelve places at once. Do you ever eat or sleep?

Any chance we could trade him to the Dodgers for Brad Penny?
Valentin said exactly what needed to be said to the media imo. He didnt low ball Sanchez but he certainly didn't let him off the hook. Good vet move

Fools still taking useless shots at Piazza, stolen bases are the most over rated part of the game.
And just for edification you don't "throw out stealers" you throw out runners.
