Shawn Green is having a miserable spring … 0-for-13 so far, which qualifies as a slump anytime.
I’ve had a good relationship so far with Green and thought I’d try humor to get him to talk. I approached, and in a serious tone, asked: “Shawn, if I were to enter a pool on your next hit, what date should I choose?’’
He laughed and said, “don’t you mean my first hit?’’
Green then spoke of how his mechanics were off, and later was talking with Carlos Beltran about timing the beginning of his stride. Interesting to watch them work together.

Thank god he has a sense of humor…and that you never tried that with Kevin Mitchell or George Foster.
Seriously, when did he say he would get that hit? I have June 15, 2007 for the Newark Bears in the office pool.
Wasn’t he bragging at the beginning of Spring about how he had noticed a hitch from last year and had corrected it and now has the timing in his swing all nice n’ tight? What happened to that?
To John (RE: Green hitch)
It’s amazing how that changes when people are actually trying to get you out. He looks horrible right now. He got called out on strikes in his first AB. It was obvious he was slow in his swing on a couple of balls.
and when will they let endy take his spot?!
give the boy a break! green has played almost every game. very mediocre. man this burns.
I thought we were all about giving the RF job to Lastings, the right-handed bat we need. Endy is not going to do this year what he did last.
jeepers…It’s EARLY in Spring Training. Fans have NO patience or respect for the process. The guy is making adjustments to his swing and it’s gonna take him time to be consistent with his swing and get his timing down.
Jose Valentin had the same problem last season and look how that turned out.
What?! endy wont do what?! oh and milledge will. they both have equal capabilities. Listen if i can sit back and hear all the love talk for lastings. you can sit back and hear me groan about Endy not getting proper respect as a damned good player.
He proved it several times and without having a negative attitude.
Isn’t that the general consensus among the scouts—that Green can no longer handle the above-average fastball?
Re: Chavez
I remember when Mets fans we’re talking about how great Melvin Mora was—he’s more than a utility player, they said. Whatever happened to him? Oh…
oh and we know its only spring training. the issue is the amount of play time good players are NOT getting.
I think Steve’s point is that Chavez has done it in the majors and saved our ass in many games.
What has Milledge done?
Not that he may not turn out to be a good ballplayer, but Endy deserves consideration for last year.

One more point.
How many rookies can a championship caliber club rely on?
If you have designs on winning you do not put rookies in critical positions and expect to win. You do that if you are the Marlins.
We want to win this year. The turmoil in the rotation is enough of a distraction.
So far Milledge looks like he won a spot on the roster. But that is the managers call. Endy won a spot on the roster last year when he hit 300 and was our defensive specialist.
