February 28: Going on a limb for Perez

For the Mets to return to the NLCS or go beyond they will need big years from a lot of people, perhaps none more than “Oliver Perez”:http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6945. The Mets have age on the front and, and inexperience and ineffective questions on the back end.

“I thought I showed them something last year,’’ Perez said. “I’ve been working hard. I want to show them I can pitch here.’’

Perez has all the tools and has tasted success before his career was derailed in large part by coaching in Pittsburgh that wanted to change him into a finesse pitcher.

I believe a key for the Mets to repeat will be a big year from Perez.

Perez will start today against Detroit, followed by Alay Soler, Billy Wagner, Aaron Heilman and Jon Adkins.

I think consistency will be the key. The players need to play to win. if that means taking a walk then you take the walk. if that means swinging on a ball headed don the middle with 2 outs and 2 strikes and man on 3rd. you do it. ;-p

If all the duckies do their job we will have another stellar year.

    Lets Go Mets Go.

No doubt. Of all the guys on the team with huge upside, Perez is the one who, if he approaches it, will have the most profound impact on the team. Right now, we’re not sure if he can even stay in the majors as a 4/5 guy – if he begins to near his ceiling, however, he’s at least our second best pitcher. I’m not crazy, but there are some striking similarities in upside and early track record between him and Mr Koufax…

Soler is another guy who, by all scouting accounts, can be a stabilizing force to the back of the rotation and a completely adequate 4/5 guy for any team. This will certainly require some progress (and calming down on the mound) to happen, but it’s not an impossibility.
