February 26: Greatness visits Mets

One of the great things about spring training is that you’ll never know who’ll show up from day to day. This afternoon, “Sandy Koufax”:http://www.baseball-reference.com/k/koufasa01.shtml was giving pitching tips to Chan Ho Park in a corner of the empty Mets clubhouse during the intra-squad game.
I was there after talking to Jorge Sosa. Hitting coach Rick Down walked by and asked what was going on and I said, “I’m just watching greatness.’’ He looked into the corner, saw Koufax, and said, “yes you are.’’

wow lucky you…
Hey!
Can he be a roving instructor in the spring for us?
i had the pleasure of meeting Sandy when he was in Met camp working with Shawn Estes back in the day. he always hangs around b/c of his friendship w/ Fred Wilpon. always good to see him hanging around.
Yeah, lucky me to see Koufax. It’s a great perk to the job. No, he won’t be a uniformed roving instructor, but he informally chats with some of the pitchers. Chan Ho Park had better have been taking notes.
Good for you John…hope you remembered your sunscreen today!
How did the arms look during the game? 1-2-3 doesn’t necessarily mean much….
Could Park actually understand a word Koufax said? Maybe pitching is the universal language….and words need not be spoken!
