February 24: Don’t expect Sanchez by Opening Day

Set-up reliever Duaner Sanchez says he’s optimistic about being ready by Opening Day, but at the same time doesn’t know when he’ll start throwing off the mound.
It’s true relievers need less innings in spring training than starters, but the games start next week and Sanchez has no real timetable.
“We just need to get him right,’’ pitching coach Rick Peterson said.
That will take time.
In the interim, pencil in Aaron Heilman as the eighth inning guy—another reason why the Mets didn’t want to to trade him—and Jon Adkins and Jorge Sosa having the opportunity to replace Sanchez on the roster.

I guess it would be okay if Sanchez is not ready for opening day. But I would think that also means that when he is ready he will probably not move into the eigth inning slot immediately. Having all of these arms around gives the Mets lots of options.
To Greg W (RE: Sanchez)
You’re probably right in how they’ll bring Sanchez back. Even if he is ready for Opening Day, I would think the Mets would baby him back. That’s a good point.
I would not count on him early.
Certainly I would not expect him to be what he was last year in 07.
