This just in …
The Mets signed catcher Sandy Alomar Jr., to a minor league contract. He’ll be in town tomorrow and will compete with Ramon Castro for the reserve role behind Paul Lo Duca.
Alomar is 40 and hit a combined .278 with one homer and 30 RBI for the Dodgers and White Sox last year.
He is a lifetime .274 hitter with 112 homers and 588 RBI with the Padres, Indians (Rookie of the Year with Cleveland in 1990), White Sox, Rockies, Rangers and Dodgers.
His reputation is that of being good defensively and handles pitchers well.

This is a good signing for Norfolk, er, New Orleans (still getting used to that). Alomar will be a great resource for all of the young pitchers down there. And a capable replacement should LoDuca or Castro go down with an injury (and Castro is certainly injury prone).
All in all, I like the move.
To Danny (RE: Alomar signing)
You’re right on all counts. Plus, the money is minimal. This is no lose all the way.
I also think this is a good move. LoDuca has such an interesting life away from baseball, that you never know what will happen with him.
John,
I saw an AP Photo of Loduca during drills
with Ramon Castro in the background
He looks fat
not phat
Did he gain alot of weight
or is it just an unflatering picture?

Excellant signing. Given the age consideration, I doubt he takes the backup spot from Castro but you never know. If Alomar finds himself in aaa, it’s good to know there’s someone able on both sides of the ball to step in at the M.L. level if needed….and chances are he will be. DeFelice is such an automatic out at the plate, and the opposition knows it.
Meanwhile, at AAA, he’ll be tremendous role model and brings a respected wealth of knowledge and experience.
