The Mets signed catcher Sandy Alomar Jr., to a minor league contract. He’ll be in town tomorrow and will compete with Ramon Castro for the reserve role behind Paul Lo Duca.
Alomar is 40 and hit a combined .278 with one homer and 30 RBI for the Dodgers and White Sox last year.
He is a lifetime .274 hitter with 112 homers and 588 RBI with the Padres, Indians (Rookie of the Year with Cleveland in 1990), White Sox, Rockies, Rangers and Dodgers.
His reputation is that of being good defensively and handles pitchers well.
