February 19: Expect motivated Beltran

The early buzz is “Carlos Beltran”:http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=6132 will show up in camp today. The over-under on the questions asked before his called strike three against the Cards is brought up is two. He must have seen that pitch a thousand times over the winter.

The Mets didn’t lose because of that on at-bat, but even so it will be interesting to see how much Beltran took it personally as he’s a very prideful person.

Beltran came to camp highly motivated last year because he wasn’t satisfied with his first season with the Mets. My guess is he’ll crank it up another level this year. You have to like that in a player.

I think he caught a lot of people by surprise with his power numbers. He does it again and the Mets win the NL East and he’ll get plenty of MVP consideration.

I wonder what Beltran could do if he actually hits at Shea this year. His home/road splits are stunning.

    Danny (RE: Hitting at Shea)

He could have an MVP type season.

It’s unfortunate that Beltran has to face those questions, as if he’s the reason we lost.
If Shawn Green’s liner in the bottom of the first is five feet higher, we would’ve had a 2-0 lead.
If Jose Valentin hits a sacrifice fly or Endy Chavez singles in the bottom of the 6th, Wainwright may never have enetered the game and there may never have even been a need to play the bottom of the 9th.
In the top of the 9th, if Heilman’s change-up drops three more inches, Molina might’ve grounded into an inning-ending double play.
In the bottom of the 9th, if Willie sends Glavine up instead of Floyd to sacrifice the runners, Beltran – if he bats at all – does so in different circumstances.
In the same inning, if Floyd puts the ball in play instead of also taking strike three, it may have been a different outcome.
That heart-wrenching loss was truly a team effort, which – if it has bothered me and all other Mets fans this much – imagine the toll it took on all the players, manager, coaches and front office.

    John,

“He could have an MVP type season.”

I’m pretty sure he did that last year.
