Willie Randolph said it was good to get the first workout of the spring out of the way. Of course, he was asked if anybody stood out, which is the traditional dumb question. Afterall, who stands out playing catch?
Randolph spoke to the young guys about not overthrowing trying to make a good first impression.
Among other things, Randolph said:
- He doesn’t plan on naming a captain, but said if his team were to take a vote it would be Tom Glavine. “He knows how to lead,” he said.
- He was glad to see David Wright and Jose Reyes show up early. “They are part of the core foundation of our team,” Randolph said. “It’s nice they not have to be told what to do.”
- The team didn’t have an interest in Bernie Williams. “He’s a free agent,” he said. “He has a decision to make. I hope it works out.”
