A quick show of hands, please … did anybody really expect Willie Randolph would guarantee the World Series? Of course not.
“We’re here to win,” Randolph said in his state of the team address today. “We want to get into the playoffs. After that, anything can happen. I’m not predicting a World Championship. That’s ridiculous.”
Of course it is … there are too many variables, not the least of which is pitching, and the Mets have their share of questions in that area with the back end of the rotation up for grabs. Predicting the Series would only add undue pressure. That kind of stuff happens in the other camp.
Randolph doesn’t want his team to think they’ll get a free pass into October, but does want them to remember the sting because that’s a powerful motivator.
Randolph said pitching, staying healthy and for the offense to improve its approach _ read be more patient at the plate and aggressive on the bases _ as his concerns.

What do you expect him to say, "We intend to suck worse than any teams has ever sucked before!" ?
