You didn't know how to spell Trachsel's name? Think about how it's pronounced and that will help.

Speaking of which, if he could win 15 games last year, why shouldn't Park be able to do pretty well himself?

I kind of see what Chan Ho is saying. From what I understand, if he makes the Opening Day roster, his salary will be $600k, with the opportunity to earn an additional $2.4 million in performance incentives. However, if he gets cut before Opening Day, they only have to pay him something like $160k. Taken together, he really has no choice but to make the rotation.

I think Park will EASILY out perform Traschel.
Traschel gave up alot of hits, walked alot of people, and doesn't strike anyone out.
Park gave up less hits, walks less batters, and can atleast strike people out.

Also, while looking up stats, I learned something new just now. It's spelled TRACHSEL, not Traschel. Wow, this whole time... oh well...

How about some facts to back up your reason that Park was getting "hammered". Oh wait thats right you simply throw a insult at a Met player and then let everyone else do the legwork. No sense backing up a statement with facts. I see the pattern here first Milledge now Park. Tell you what I will be avoiding your site from now on.

John,

Couldn't agree more with you about Park. Anything can happen in Spring Training (Bannister, 2006). I think all the guys brought in for the 5th spot will have to overachieve due to the abundance of competition - and Park should realize that.

I still think Pelfrey has the best shot at cracking the rotation, and all the other guys might have to wait until one of the top 4 get injured.

* To metstoday (RE: Park): When a pitcher boasts I always think to myself if he were that good why was he available in the first place. I have to wonder if he is really that much better than Trachsel.

* To Trish (RE: Anderson Hernandez): You can't tell from winter ball what Hernandez will do in the major leagues. If Valentin goes down, I think Randolph will go to his bench first.

Big words from a guy every team passed on until a week before spring training, in a market so desperate for pitching that the grandchildren of Jason Marquis and Gil Meche are set for life.

In response to Trish, we'll have to see about AHern. He hit well last winter too. It may have something to do with the lower quality of both the pitching and the infield defense in the winter league. I get the feeling he had a lot of ground ball hits that found holes.

so while you're pointing out that lastings isn't in yet, where is Anderson Hernadez? Where his winter ball stats a fluke or can it be he may actually be able to hit major league pitching some day? I know he also hit well during the winter last year. I guess I'm just wondering who will replace Valentin when he succumbs to injury sometime this year?

Park was pretty decent last year in 21 starts for the Padres. His WHIP was 1.39. The NL average WHIP was 1.40, so he was average. Average is not bad if the alternative is well below average. In fact if your #5 starter is average you probably have a good rotation. He was awful on 2005 and 2006 though. Maybe he's just now fully recovered from his injury.

Its a good time for spring training to start. The cold weather seems to be really locked in now. It was looking like the warmest winter ever and now it hasn't been above 40 in 3 weeks.
