Before coming to New York I covered the Orioles, and the phone has rung several times today from colleagues wanting a scouting report on Steve Trachsel. In particular, why did he last so long?
Two reasons in my mind:
1) Despite winning 15 games, one was never comfortable watching him. The Mets gave him roughly six runs a game in support and he needed every one of those runs.
2) Nobody with the Mets said so on the record, but privately they weren’t pleased when he begged out of his NLCS start against the Cardinals after taking a ball off his leg. Already short on pitching, Trachsel pulled himself and this didn’t sit well.
Trachsel was hit hard in the NL and in a pitcher’s park. He’ll probably need more than six runs a game in Camden Yards.
