Coming at you this afternoon from the Marriott Marquis overlooking Times Square. Just returning from a press conference with Omar Minaya, who is leaving in a few hours to Ghana. He’ll be joined by Dave Winfield, Bob Watson, Reggie Smith and Al Jackson. Four days of spreading goodwill, bringing baseball equipment and conducting clinics.
“The New York Mets have a world vision,” Minaya said. “We will be in Latin America, we will be in Asia, and we will be in Africa.”
Ghana’s sport is soccer, but Minaya said “athletes are athletes … all they need is coaching.”
Perhaps in five years there will be a baseball academy in that county. In 10, maybe somebody will get to the minors.”
In the interim?
“I hope I see plenty of Mets caps and T-Shirts,” Minaya said.
