January 31: Mets notes

Posted by: John Delcos - Posted in Uncategorized on Jan 31, 2007

Lefthander Dave Williams, one of the candidates for the fifth spot in the rotation, underwent surgery today to repair a herniated disc in his neck after complaining of pain after starting his throwing program. The Mets should know sometime next week when he’ll resume baseball activities. Williams was 3-1 with a 5.59 ERA in six games, including five starts, for the Mets last season, after coming over from Cincinnati in late May.

The Mets announced they signed veteran outfielder Ruben Sierra to a minor league contract. Sierra, 41, is a .268 lifetime hitter with 306 homers and 1,322 RBI. He’s played with Texas, Oakland, the Yankees, Toronto, Cincinnati, Chicago White Sox, Detroit, Seattle and Minnesota.

Also, 28-year-old pitcher Jason Standridge elected to be a free agent. He was designated for assignment, Jan. 26.

Wow, that long list of arms we had just got quite a bit shorter. I was worried about whether all those pitchers would get a chance to prove themselves in sring training. This will make the job of choosing guys for the 25-man roster more manageable, but it’s a shame.

I liked Williams and was figuring he’d more than likely be our long man out of the pen. With him gone, which guys do you think are likely to step up and fill that role (assuming Williams will not be ready for opening day)? Sosa? Vargas? Soler? I know almost nothing about Adkins and Bostick.

    To Chris (RE: Williams)

The Mets say they’ll have a better idea of Williams’ status next week. It’s hard to say if he’ll be ready for the start of the season, and if so, then how effective. The fifth spot in the rotation remains wide open.

    Hi all

I think Marty Noble has said that Aaron Sele could be this year’s Darren Oliver. We should be so lucky!

seems like a natural cycle of spring already weeding out the no-to-be’s….i think Williams will be able to help at some point, most likely as a long guy, but i think this just opened a window of opportunity for Sele if this lasts much into the spring…

season aint here yet. I wouldnt worry and with the pocket full of miracles Omar and willie pulled last year , I aint worrying.

    One down…

Why did we get Sierra? I guess a minor league contract is an easy decision, but what’s the point? It’s not like he can actually field a position.

just remember the minor leaguers they pulled up to save the season. They are stuffing the Ballot box. ;-]

We already have Franco wasting a roster spot by being able to play only one position and barely being able to get around on the ball. What purpose does Sierra serve? He can’t play any positions and Franco is the resident pinch hitter.

  9. Steve C.#2 from Norfolk

Rumor has it that Sierra is going to be Crash Davis to Lastings Millege’s Nuke LaLoosh.

I don’t think we have to worried about Sierra’s signing, but I hope Steve #2 is correct! Milledge seems to really need a mentor, Cliffy’s gone and it seems unlikely that Lastings is gonna make the club out of spring training. If Sierra is down in AAA working with the kid, then this is definitely a good signing.

    Keep up the good work!
