   hey john, long time no comment!

   i really dont seeing milledge in there. i mean, we got ben johnson, and he seems like a milledge to me…without as much of the hype and attitude.
   sure johnson has some…but not like LM, the TO of the team dare i say? (not as talented…at least not yet…)

   Yeah. Lastings is just like TO. That’s brilliant.

   The worst case scenario for Lastings’ development is riding the pine; second worst case scenario is playing everyday in center in Norfolk.

   It is my hope that no matter what happens he gets 600+ABs this year and a lot of time in the corners.

   I too would be surprised if Lastings was with the big club come April (bc they surely will want him to play everyday too), but I think a real dominant spring and a subpar effort by Green, or an injury to Green and we will see 44 patrolling right. It’s only a matter of time.

   but…lastings will NEVER be patrolling Norfolk…at least not in a mets uniform!

   Milledge doesn’t have to be on the Opening Day Roster. The Mets have solid guys that won’t hurt the team and have some depth in case of injuries. And I know the team wouldn’t want Milledge up unless he’s starting everyday.
   With that said, we do have to remember that Milledge could use a little more time in AAA. He’s only had 1,000 AB’s TOTAL in the minors. And he was THE youngest player in the entire National League last year.

   There are a handful of guys on the bubble, and much will ultimately depend on how many pitchers they take north.

   Do they carry six relievers? If so, they would have an extra position slot, for which Milledge would be a likely candidate.

   If they carry seven or eight relievers (a possibility, considering the perceived weakness of the projected rotation), then they’ll be playing with a short bench.

   If you count on five starters and eight everyday players, that takes you immediately to 13. The bench will most likely feature Franco (14), Easley (15), Castro (16), Johnson (17) and Chavez (18). The last spot could very well be decided between Newhan and Milledge.

   I’m with the others who believe Milledge would be well served by playing everyday in AAA, with a likely promotion coming once Shawn Green’s truss gives out.

   I think the real competition will be in the bullpen, where Wagner (1), Heilman (2), Schoeneweis (3) and Feliciano (4) are the givens. The remaining 2-3 spots will be up for grabs among Sanchez (who might see some DL/rehab time), Burgos (who might need some more AAA), Adkins (a sleeper pick), Williams (potential long man), Padilla, Sosa, Schmoll, Soler, et al.

   My bad with the Norfolk slip of the tongue. God knows they’re now proud to be Zephyrs…

   Milledge sitting is the worst possible option. Let him play, wherever it is, and let it be in a corner position. I swear that if they have him starting in center in NOLA, the only possible reason why is to showcase him (again) for a trade. He clearly won’t be our CF, and so the guy needs to get some time in right and left.

   I agree. Milledge has an attitude right now that isn’t right for baseball and his talent was overrated. No plate discipline.

   Milledge has a place on this team this year. There is no way both Alou and Green will stay healthy all year. Outside of Endy, who else would you rather see get the at bats, Newhan?
   He’s a kid, and last year he played like a kid.

   No matter what it role is on this team, as a bench player, a starter or just trade bait, he’ll need to play. I expect him to get a full shot at spring training and for him to break camp with the team.

    Aggree, with a stipulation. He won’t be in AAA long before a call up do to injury. I think he’s going to progress alot this year because of Johnson. Johnson/ Milledge are very similar players, the challenge will push them both. They’ve always been the top of class, now there’s someone their own age and level,(each other)as competition. No room for complacency or you might get surpassed, which wasn’t the case last year.

    Hopefully Milledge makes a name for himself early in the season so he can be used as a bargaining chip. Sending him somewhere far, far away to pick up a pitching prospect or a #4 or #5 guy would be perfect. With Endy Chavez on the bench, we don’t need additional outfielders taking up roster spots.

    Highly, highly doubtful Milledge makes the team – not when there’s both Endy and Johnson as capable outfield backups.
    Milledge still needs to mature every which way and the minors is the best place for him to do so.

    I hope we don’t trade Milledge. He’s a tremendous talent. Who cares about attitude problems. Sheffield has attitude problems supposedly but the guy can hit. If Milledge turns out what he’s projected to be I don’t think one Met fan is going to complain.

    As far as making the team, Alou and/or Green are not going to go through the whole season healthy, he’s going to come up at some point in the season either as the starter or back-up.

    It isn’t about whether Milledge makes the opening day roster this year, i just don’t get that. The kid is 21 and if there weren’t injuries last year to other players, he’d still be rookie eligible this upcoming year. He would have spent last year continuing to tear it up in AAA, with everyone continuing to love him, and he’d be one of the highest rated prospects in the game. But that didn’t happen, instead, he was thrown into the fire when he wasn’t necessarily ready. So yeah, he doesn’t have the best plate disicpline, but he’s 21, remind you of anyone? (Reyes). Kids that young just don’t have great discipline, thats how it goes (unless you’re Pujols or Cabrera or somone). But i’ll tell you this, the kid has talent When people talk about his bat speed, they’re not joking around. And another thing, he may have an attitude, and he made a couple mistakes, but I don’t understand why you’d write him off because of that. Let him grow up, as a person and as a player, and I think a lot of people’s opinions will be changing fast.

    Dude, are you really a professional sports-writer? Christ. I hope you remember you said this in no longer from now than 2008 when Milledge is killing it in Shea for cheap.

    Why do so many people whose JOB it is to follow sports have so little sense?

    I would like to see him on Mets this year because I think this is the year when his development will make him a valuable majore league player. He’s already masteted the AAA level. Yeah his attitude last year wasn’t the best but I think there was a significant adjustment.

    I do not think he will make the major league roster when they break, even if he has a good spring.

    He needs seasoning and the best place for this is AAA. Also the fact that they are in NO is great. If he gets distracted there so much the better. Better he learns to deal down there than up here.

    I hope he does grow up and take his JOB seriously. His attitude strikes me of one who has been coddled too much.

    In reference to Reyes, yes he had growing pains too but did not have the ‘tude and could field his position when he came up.

    I really hope that he learns from last year and grows both as a man and as a player. If his head is on straight he could be fun to watch.

    Both Chavez and Reyes, when put in the field came to play and had fun and were respectful ball players. What made milledge so different? Unless we have a meltdown in the OF we don’t need him. maybe as a pinch hitter for the pitcher. That’s all i want to see of him this year unless willie fixed his attitude. ;-]

    I’d say leave him major league camp as long as possible so he gets exposure to the way major leaguers carry themselves. Hopefully this will help his behavioral issues. Have him start the season in AAA and then when Shawn Green is hitting .240 towards the end of May you have a decision to make as far as promoting Milledge, giving Chavez the every day job, or getting help from outside the organization.

    All of these descriptions of Milledge (young, athletic, with power and speed, cocky, arrogant, erratic, and an attitude) sound reminiscent of Kevin Mitchell at the beginning of his career. While I’m not saying that Milledge will be a future league MVP, let’s please not trade him for a Kevin McReynolds/second tier player and let’s give him a chance to develop.
