January 30: Question of the Day

January
30

I’ve asked you your favorite Met of all time and who you think will be the suprise player in the upcoming season. Now I’d like for you to give me the most important Met of 2007. The one player that has to have a big season for the Mets to get back into the playoffs.

  1. MetsNut

Oliver Perez, he will be our young ace.

  2. Jay

    Tom Glavine

  3. Devon

Orlando Hernandez. He and Tom Glavine will need to anchor down the young rotation.

  4. Dan

as long as the lineup produces as expected all we need is for the pitching to keep us in games.

im going to have to say el duque. he has to show that he has recovered from his injury and can give as many quality starts and innings as possible.

  5. dave

    John Maine,

He has to show the same composure and success he had last year for the full season.

    Dave

  6. webb

    moises alou

  7. murth

One of the young starters be it Maine or Perez. Now wouldn’t both be great.

  8. Mike

    Jose Reyes. End of story.
This guy is the machine that makes the offense go, and anchors the infield defense.
Everyone is concerned with the pitching, but the Mets had 13 different starters in winning the division last year. If Reyes regresses or is injured, than the strength of the team (the offense) will be lost.

  9. Lister

    Oliver Perez.

    No brainer.

If he turns in a plus-season, all our pitching questions are out the window, and he makes a wonderful fourth arm with Pedro, Tommy, and the Duke come playoff time.

Like Philly has a shot… they always look good on paper. So shut yer hole, JimJim Rollins!

  10. Andrew

Has to be David Wright, with the departure of Cliff Floyd (leaving the lesser hitter, Shawn Green, to “protect” him) and drop off of homerun production after the All Star Break, David Wright is an even more intricate part of this team offensively. Some factors to consider would be the team’s reliance on young pitching on their starting staff which would benefit tremendously from Wright’s defense and offense. Also the increased media spotlight from being the “face of franchise” could prove to be challenging. I do believe, however, that David will rise to the challenge.

  11. Matthias

Has to be Jose Reyes. He showed time and time again last season that when he hits, the Mets win. When he’s off, they lose. Reyes is the heart and soul of the Met’s offense. They can get by with average pitching as long as they score runs, and with Reyes in there they’ll score.

  12. Alfonzo

Jose Reyes, no question in my mind. Starting pitching is of course very important, as are the guys behind Reyes in the lineup, but he was the team’s MVP last year, and he sets the tone for the entire team. If Reyes shows even modest improvement over what he did last season, he could become a generational talent.

  13. Matt

Duaner Sanchez….we need him to revert back to his 2006 form…

If he does, we again have one of the best bullpens in baseball, if he doesnt…then we are average…

  14. ralf

imo, it will always be jose reyes

  15. David

Another vote for Oliver Perez. We know what to expect from Glavine, El Duque and probably Maine. A strong year by Perez could settle down the rotation and allow them to slowly groom one of their younger guys in the 5th spot.

  16. Bigirononhiship

I really like to think that the whole pitching rotation will surprise me, especially Perez and Maine.

  17. Steve Ferrara

Anderson Hernandez will come up when either Alou or Green come up lame. As a result Valentin will move to the bench when Chavez starts the outfield. Voila.. Anderson Hernandez

  18. raincntry

    Carlos Beltran

Our outfield production is in doubt with two aging corners in Alou and Gereen or an unproven product in Milledge, or a great 4th glove with Chavez. Beltran’s 2006 was all we hoped for when we signed him, 41hrs, gold glove, clutch hits. He absolutely needs to produce at or near that level.

He’ll have to cover almost all the outfield, and produce at the plate for the Mets to make it back to the playoffs. He’s the only really reliable outfield starter who can cover ground, and he will be relyed up on to make up for Green and Alou’s shortcomings because we have a staff of contact pitchers.

On offense he plays just as important a role. Delgato will hit for power and knock in runs, Wright can be expected to increase his power and hit around .300, and Reyes will continue to shine, but Carlos Beltran is the dynamic lynchpin of the offense. When he gets on base his speed can put almost as much pressure on the pitcher as Reyes, but more importantly, he extends the inning for Delgato and Wright and Alou, and that’s why we scored so many runs last year. Belran’s season allowed for the offense to just wear pitchers out, and he’s no slouch in the power department as he lead the team in Hr’s.

The Mets simply cannot replace all the things he does with one, two, or even three players.

Since we don’t have a deep or particularly strong staff, the pressure to win will fall on the offense. As much as I love the young left side of the infield, the Mets 2007 chances rides on Carlos Beltran.

  19. Chris

Carlos Beltran. He’s their best allaround player (with Reyes following closely behind), and the Mets will need another big year from him. It will be interesting to see his relationship with the fans after the called 3rd strike, since some fans for whatever reason have not completely warmed up to him despite an outstanding 2006. I will not be surprised to hear a minority of boo birds in April if he gets off to a slow start.

  20. nick

carlos beltran jose reyes and oliver perez carlos beltran because he needa to keep up the way he played last year and set a tone jose reyes because he needa to get on base so the 2 ,3 ,4 batter could move him over hopefully lo duca moves him over after a stolen base and beltran or delgado or wright drive him in and oliver perez because he needa to pitch like he did in the playoffs and end the starting roation questions

  21. Ryan Crouch

Well considering the age issues of Tommy and Duque, and the unknown talents of Mike Pelfrey and Phillip Humber, I’m voting for Ollie Perez. If like others have said, if the guy has the type of season he is capable of, he is a potential ace of the staff. Tom Glavine seems better suited to be a #2 pitcher, and Duque seems more like a 4 or 5. Slotting Perez into the number 1 or 2 allows Hernandez to have the occasional off day, which he will most certainly have. I expect John Maine to have a solid season, maybe 10-12 wins and a 4.00 ERA, and Mike Pelfrey will hopefully get some experience as the #5. That leaves Oliver Perez. If he’s an ace, the mets rotation rounds out very nicely. If he’s a bum, they are left looking for one or two starting pitchers come the all-star break.

  22. Steve C.

Endy Chavez. ALL the others, listed, are pretty much proven, except the rookies. Endy woke everyone up with that unreal play,as well as his regular play. everyone spoke about the OF, but if he is taken seriously we dont worry about the OF.

  23. Dan

Oddly enough Lastings Milledge. I don’t Green and/or Alou will remain healthy all year. Randolph prefers Chavez off the bench so if Milledge can step in and get the job done while Green or Alou is on the DL the Mets lineup will still be able to score runs. It will be up to him to show us what he’s got.

  24. L.J.P.

Ollie P., if he can put it together along with Maine and the #5 pitcher, it’s going to be a very long season for the rest of the NL.

  25. PAL88

I think the usual cast (Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Delgado) will have typical plus seasons…I also think the guy who will surprise us all will be Ben Johnson…I see Green going down and Johnson filling in admirably…

  26. Steve C.

i have to half agree about green. is lanky build it never looks like he’s trying. i have yet to see any real eye catching moments from him.
    :-(

  27. Joan

    David Wright and John Maine

  28. Craig

The most critical person to wear a Mets uniform in 2007, is Rick Peterson.

As for players, John Maine, to me, is the most critical. Oliver Perez may return to his top form, but I envision he will always be a Sid Fernandez type who, while he could be dominant, will likely always throw too many balls for you to consider him one of your “givens.” What I mean is, even when he is unhittable, he will have high pitch counts and not provide you many 7 or 8 inning outings. Maine, to me, is a key transitory pitcher at the #3 slot between the aging front line and the erratic back end of the rotation. The more games Maine can get you 7 innings, the better equiped the bullpen will be to help hold the fort over a 162 game season.

  29. Peter

    sing along…Jose, Jose, Jose, Jose

  30. Ryan

I think it has to be beltran. They need an MVP-type year from him again, and he has to prove he’s over striking out to end the season. Plus, offensively the mets always seemed lost when he wasn’t in the lineup.

  31. ajsmith

    Hi John,

Haven’t posted since game 7, so with pitchers and catchers getting so close we can taste it, it’s good to be back.

So many key players for ‘07, and clearly, we’ll need more than one to come through. Name any of the starting pitchers – especially Perez, who is a true wildcard in that equation, Beltran for everything he means to the team on offense and defense, D-Wright, the developing professional hitter in mid-lineup, and even some of the key members of what should be a very deep bullpen.

But for all of that – and assuming there are some ups, and some downs, with the group of players mentioned above, I have to think that this team goes as far as Jose Reyes takes them this year.

Reyes makes everything more difficult for the opposition, and putting him on base, especially with no one out, means runs – often plural – as the guys behind him see a high percentage of fastballs.

The kid made a quantum leap in ‘06, starting sometime in June when the light just seemed to go on for him. I really do think – given his youth, his talent, his level head, and his work ethic – that he has a chance to be the most valuable player in the game over the next few years.

Plus, his energy and enthusiasm feed this team. There’s nothing put on about his excitement, and his teammates – understanding that – embrace him and ride his wave.

Looking at his stats from last season, and given the natural prgression of a 23 yr-old hitter, I think it’s conceivable that Jose can put up a line that looks something like:

    .310, 200 hits, 25+ HR, 100 RBI, 125+ Runs, 50 2b, 25 3b, 85+ SB

If he’s doing that, and everything else evens out, he’s a legit MVP candidate and the Mets likely win the division.

I can’t wait to see it.

  32. ajsmith

Oh, and did I mention a legit shot at a gold glove at SS? Yeah, that too.

  33. E.L.

This is team effort so I think the premise of the question doesn’t take that into account.

That said, I agree with those who chose Reyes. He does so much to jumpstart the lineup and disrupt/distract/worry the opposition. As well as energize the bench and clubhouse.
He’s irreplaceable. But does he absence guarantee the Mets won’t make the playoffs? I don’t believe so.

  34. Benny Ayala

Omar Minaya—because at some point he’s very likely going to have bring in a legitimate front-line starter for this team.

  35. Johann

    A-ROD.

  36. Mexicanmetsfan

Oliver Perez, not only because he’ll help the starting rotation, we’ve seeing, what this guy can do, check his stats in 2004, but also because by settling in, the team wont have to feel the preasure of Pedro’s recovery deadline, or rush him to the mound.

I predict that by opening day 2008, Oliver Perez, will be our ace, he just needed to get out of a lossing embiroment.

  37. Phil

Favorite Met of all time: Tom Seaver- The franchise
Surprise Met of 2007: Oliver Perez- Develops into the ace he was once projected to become.
