Had the chance to see Paul Lo Duca. He says the rehab of his left thumb is on schedule and he’ll be ready for spring training. He also said he wants to stay with the Mets beyond this season, but there have been no talks yet about an extension.
“I like what we have here and I think we can take it to the next step,’’ he said. “I would like to be here when the new stadium opens.’’
Catcher is a wear-and-tear position, so I don’t see the Mets doing anything with Lo Duca until after this season.

I always thought that Lo Duca was going to be a bridge to the next young catcher from the minors or the next free agent class (if any are available). He has performed very well for the Met’s and I would not be surprised if they did eventually give him an extension.
Lo Duca reminds me so much of gary carter. I just hope this mets organization shows him more love than the last organization.
Gary Carter?? Really? Lo Duca reminds me much more of John Sterns, but better. Hits for average, gets on base. Fiery, maybe a little out of control, but in a good way. How many Mets, in Mets history, have hit over .317. Not many. Lo Duca, I think, is a keeper.
While catchers do wear down, sometimes the love of a young girl (or two) can put the bounce back in one’s step. It’s a great feeling—just like blowing a paycheck (or two) at OTB!
The off-the-field stuff aside, the big question about Lo Duca is how many catchers continue to be effective at his age. Historically, catchers decline—rapidly—at around the age of 33. What’s in his favor, beyond the idea that he hasn’t shown any signs of age, is how thin the position is at the big-league level. Could a declining Lo Duca be a better value than other catchers playing at peak performance?
I say The kid because, all he did was play and enjoyed it. Lo Duca is the same way. he will hit bunt whatever it takes to play. That’s why i likened him to Carter. ;-]

with Mike Barrett and Johnny Estrada being most likely available, as well as 5-6 years younger than Paul, i gotta think you wait and see what develops on the FA market. I love Paul’s passion and intensity, but his age makes me wish we’d had hiim 2 seasons earlier (when Piazza’s decline began)....

LoDuca is the most overrated player on the team. The high batting average is deceptive. He doesn’t hit for power or get on base at a high rate. He also doesn’t throw out runners very well. Not only should they not extend his contract but they should bat him 7th or 8th and play Castro more (if he is still around).
Have you ever checked out Castro’s AAA numbers? Sure, they’re PCL-inflated, but impressive nonetheless.
