The Mets will announce Willie Randolph’s three-year extension today in a press conference in Manhattan.
He’ll get $2 million a season.
All those years I covered the Yankees I always thought Randolph would get his chance and he’s made the most of it. He should have been the NL Manager of the Year in 2006 for simply winning in NY for the first time, and doing it with a patchwork rotation. Remember, this is a guy who never managed before and had no experience with pitchers, but plugged in guys to the rotation and juggled the bullpen.
However, this season is where he’ll really earn his money because the expectations are so high. And, there’s nothing like expectations in NY.

John,
I’ve read elsewhere that he’ll be paid $5.45 over the next three years, or approximately $1.8 per season. You were just rounding up, right?
Does this officially put an end to the return-of-Art-Howe rumors?
Yea, I think he was rounding up…
2007 – $1.4 million
2008 – $2 million
2009 – $2.25 million
Which is essentially $1.88 million per year. This is good considering he was set to make $700,000 in 07, and that was doubled.
2010 – $2.5 million (Club Option)
With the club option, that is $2.04 million per season. Maybe that is the number he was referring to.

To Ryan and Russ (RE: Rounding up): Yes, I was rounding it off. Sorry for the confusion. You’ll notice in my story for The Journal News (Friday’s edition) I used the exact numbers.
