If Cornelius had never gotten hurt last summer, or at least not as often as he did, the Mets would never have gone out to get Green. If they didn’t have Green on their hands for 2007, I would be all for signing Cliff this year. But we do have Green, and you can see the snake-eating-its-own-tail we have here. Alou makes more sense in left than Cliff. Cliff, maybe, makes more sense platooning in right (w/Johnson if he can stick with it?) than Green, but that’s all we can say.
I will miss Cliff a lot. He became my favorite Met over the last three years.
I like cliff. He is injury plagued. I would sign him to a reasonable contract. no doubt.
Didnt cliff hurt his achilles? though he was good. If someone wants him. take the money and run and use it to get ssomeone good and healthy!
I have to agree with the first post, if Cliff does not get hurt, then there is no use for Green and he isn’t on the 07 roster. No Green, Cliff can be signed to an incentive laden deal. Mets Have Chavez and Johnson off the bench plus Valentins ability to play the outfield and they are covered for the 07 season.Since all that is moot now, Newhan figures to make the team and will back-up in the inf and of.
I have no idea what major league clubhouse dynamics are like, but you can’t lead if you don’t play – ESPECIALLY if you spend half the season rehabbing somewhere other than the ballpark.
I liked Cliff, and it seems like he was a good leader and mentor to the younger guys. But if the Mets consider Moises Alou a better injury risk than him, that’s saying something.

i loved cliff, great guy, great teamate, hard worker, and he could really hit too, however, and it’s a shame, his career has been seriously hampered by injuries, and this wasnt just some freak injury, his achilles is a recurring problem, and there’s no telling if he’ll ever be able to stay healthy again. Now, that being said, Alou, even if Cliff is healthy, is an upgrade to Cliff offensively (say what you will about defense, but they both work hard out there) and he’s also less of an injury risk in my mind. Sure Alou is older, but he’s been more solid for longer, and ran into an injury just last year, his games played before last year are all we could ask for. Also, he actually CAME BACK from his injury, and performed very well (check his september stats) while Floyd never really came back from his injury at all. Now, as far as playing Alou in right, and getting rid of Green if we signed Floyd, I still go back to the injury risk of Floyd, he’s not a guy i’m sure you can count on at this point, to be an everyday player. Plus, we already have Green signed, and it may not be so easy to just get rid of him. Therefore, I can’t say i’d bring Floyd back. Sorry buddy.
Though the outfield seems to be getting a bit crowded with upcoming young talent, I would offer Cliff Floyd a contract heavily based on incentives. Floyd can still hit with power and could fit in a platoon situation with Alou. If that was going to be the case, then as the GM I would have made an offer to Alou for less $. That way they can give each other the night off to rest their ailments.
No. I prefer Alou since he hits LH pitching. I love Floyd’s personality but Alou will serve this better than cliff would.
I was really sorry to see Cliff go. But you can’t pay major money and give an important roster spot to a guy who has so much trouble staying on the field. It’s not like 2006 was the first time he’s had injury problems. Also, we were lefty-heavy. Alou can give Wright some big-time protection when he’s in the lineup.
I wouldn’t have re-signed him. His injuries have made reliability such an overwhelming issue.
That said, the Cubs might get a great year out of him…but I wouldn’t count on it.
