January 17: Phillies’ Lieber not a fit for Mets

Word out of Philly has the Phillies trying to deal “Jon Lieber”:http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5235, and one national writer says the Mets should make a run at him. No way.
Lieber was 9-11 with a lofty 4.93 ERA last season, but more importantly is 36 with a $7.5 million contract. That’s not what the Mets are looking for. Besides, do you really see the Phillies trading within the division? I don’t.
Lieber is the kind of pitcher teams with pitching holes trade for during the season. Teams go into spring training with the idea of going with youth.

I say forget pitching for now, bullpen has gotten strong. Look for another BAT/fielder.
Steve C. (RE: Looking for bat)
What do you want? Infielder or outfielder? Lefty hitter?
If hard pressed, infielder. I think our outfield has good potential. we always seem to be shy a catcher in the most important games. And there will never be a first baseman quite like Keith again. :-(
Lefty/Righty it shouldn’t matter if they HIT.
They could use a good OF.
Last year we started with 4 w/ Milledge on the side. We are very thin at OF.
To Steve C. (RE: Infield)
As of now, I have Damion Easley and Dave Newhan as reserve infielders. There’s also Julio Franco, but that’s first base. There is no infield power coming off the bench.
To Dave (RE: Outfield)
The outfield reserves are Endy Chavez and Ben Johnson. Newhan and Valentin can also play. I don’t like the outfield. Alou is a breakdown waiting to happen and Green has little power. If they hit with power like last season, they can afford to carry Green. But a corner outfielder has to hit for power.
Mets should try for Ichrio, won’t sign with M’s after this year. M’s will look to deal him. green at 3m, is not a bad 4th OF.
Anthony (RE: Ichiro)
That’s thinking outside the box. I like Ichiro. He’s be perfect hitting behind Reyes. You’re right about Green. He’s past his prime and they could do better. But, I’m not sure Milledge is the answer, either.
...given the Met’s weakness at the outfield corners (Alou is questionable due to age/physical issues, Green is a season away from working on a minor league deal), would you trade Oliver Perez and (pick a middle reliever)for Nady??
To Dave (RE: Outfield/Nady)
Sure, Nady would look good now, but let’s get back to that after the season. If Perez pitches to his potential, then the trade favors the Mets.
Leiber has pitched for the Mets the last six years, only we call him Steve Trachsel…
ugh TRASH-el. everyone knows my feelings towards him.
Pitching is a necessity that is for sure. but when your offense cant get a run thats a big issue. I really feel pitching now needs the back burner and we need to shore up the lineup and get the singles/hit & runs. and the grand salami every so often. This is what the mets lacked during the playoffs. the simple stuff. With that said, they sure looked damn better last year than the last 10. :-D
Bren (RE: Trachsel)
Nice line.
Would the Mets stand any shot at all at getting either Ichrio or Oswalt in July if their respective teams struggle?
