A Texas Rangers official told me Barry Zito won’t get done in the next few days. He said the Rangers are in it, but have their financial limits. What they are, he won’t say, but indicated the six years and $102 million being mentioned are close. He said owner Tom Hicks has been burned and won’t go crazy.
To me, however, those numbers are already crazy for a pitcher four years removed from his best season.
GM Omar Minaya said he wouldn’t specify his parameters. “I’ve been burned before when I’ve done that,’’ Minaya said. “I don’t want to get locked in.’’
Word is Zito prefers the nightlife of a big city to Arlington. Evidently, he’s not a geography major. Dallas is 15 minutes away.
Some Met officials are saying the five years and $73 million they were willing to give Roy Oswalt is their limit, but in reality that’s where they will start.
Minaya said he has not been given any assurances by Boras that the Mets would get a chance to match any offer.
