- On the surface, Burgos’ power arm has more value than Bannister. There’s a greater upside there.
- With John Maine and Oliver Perez, Bannister would have been a fifth starter had he made the team, but that was far from a given. If the Mets pull off a deal for a starter, Bannister is in the minor leagues again. He’s also in the minors if Mike Pelfrey has a great spring.
- Burgos will be slotted in the bullpen behind Duaner Sanchez and Aaron Heilman, making him a sixth-inning presence.
- Heilman could factor in a trade for a starter. He clearly doesn’t want to stay in the bullpen. If the Mets have the opportunity to package him in a deal for a quality starter, they’ll do it. You’ve heard the names Joe Blanton and Rich Harden from Oakland.
