Word is the Mariners are shopping slugging first baseman Richie Sexson, obviously a bargain at $14 million. Of the two New York teams, I would think he’s probably more a fit for the Yankees than the Mets, that is, of course, if Jason Giambi becomes the full-time DH. Seattle signed outfielder Jose Guillen to a one-year, $5.5 million contract. The Mariners will be Guillen’s eighth team of his career. Nothing like stability.
Seattle could lose pitcher Gil Meche, who is seeking a four-year, $36-million contract. The Mets are expected to talk to him, but early speculation has him going to either the Cubs, where he will be reunited with manager Lou Piniella, or Toronto. With the Mets he would be a No. 3 starter. Meche was 11-8 with a 4.48 ERA in 32 starts last season, throwing 186 2/3 innings.
