I think Bud was pretty much a failure as the Comish. Sure the coffers are full of $ but the history of the game shows that no matter how many times baseball is pronounced dead, it comes back.
Inter-league play: Bad idea everywhere except NY and Chi, screws with the schedules.
All-star game: Horrible idea that the best team does not have home field advantage in the World Series, and what the hell was up with that tie?
Wild Card: Success. Keeps more fans in more cities excited about baseball till the end.
Revenue Sharing: I’m not inclined to give Bud all that much credit here as it was bound to happen.
Steroids/performance enhancers: Only made a move out of fear that Congress would legislate one.
Bud is the personficiation of what you get when an industry tries to police itself. Rather than a fellow owner at the helm, MLB really needs someone with integrity who’s interested in doing more than just raising revenues. The whole steroids debacle crystallizes how MLB has chosen short-term profitability over long-term credibility.

I think you hit for the cycle on your post. The game does have a tendency to survive no matter how the owners have tried to tamper with it.
interleague play tampers with the very essence of the sport, which is every team running the same course and face the same obstacles. And, as far as I’m concerned, the labor deal and steroids are linked. Let’s make nice so Congress doesn’t look too closely. Of course, with Congress, who can tell? They’ll jump on the next high profile cause.
Why can’t they just do their job, which is making the basics better at a minimum of taxpayer costs?

Selig is an owner, plain and simple. His first instinct is to look at the game from an owner’s perspective. I can’t fault him for that because that’s what he is. But, an owner can’t be the commissioner because there’s no objectivity in his decisions.
I hate interleague play it ruins it all as i said earlier and john d has also said.
Problem with comish’s are they need to be impartial. He is not, he wants to know how much money HE will make.

Can’t petition for Selig’s removal, because it will only go to the owners, who hired him in the first place. Kinda like appealing to a judge who sentenced you.

He presided over steroids, interleague which was ok for one year. the all star game idiocy, etc.
one more thing to add to the list of complaints above.
how about the mlb expos. how long did the league own the team. and then refuse to sell it until they got a lease on a stadium? what was that about? should not the new team make a deal that they want?

You hit all of Bud’s criticisms on the head. Nailed them, actually. Bud, however, gets a pass from the owners because MLB is making lots and lots and lots of money. And, money is the bottom line. In management’s thinking, it always has been and always will be.—>
