Are you sitting down?
The Red Sox are the winners in the Daisuke Matsuzaka sweepstakes, offering $51.1 just for the rights to talk with the Japanese pitcher. You have to think if they sign him, and they have 30 days to do so, the contract will be at least that much. How can you think otherwise?
Whether he’s worth it only time will tell. But, he doesn’t have a track record vs. major league hitters which makes him a gamble. If the contract matches the bid, that’s $100 million for a question. I don’t care what he did in the World Baseball Classic this spring, the guy is a risk for that kind of coin.
If he turns out to be a bust the financial drain can derail a team for a decade.
