ESPN is reporting the Boston Red Sox bid $42 million for the right to negotiate with Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. Count on the salary package being at least that amount. MLB isn’t confirming, but Mets COO Jeff Wilpon mentioned today the team was ready to go to Plan B.
MLB said it would make an announcement tomorrow at 8 p.m. That’s the deadline for Matsuzaka’s team, the Seibu Lions, to accept the bid. After accepting, and at that figure there’s no reason to believe they won’t, then the Red Sox would have exclusive negotiating rights for 30 days. If a deal is not reached, then the bid would not be paid.
By saying Plan B, Wilpon acknowledged contact with agent Scott Boras for Barry Zito. Boras also represents Matsuzaka.
